The Forensic Technician is the sleuthing arm of the Security department, investigating crime scenes, taking fingerprints, hunting down leads, and solving the coldest of cases. The Forensic Technician answers to the Chief of Security.

The Role

First and foremost, to make things perfectly clear: the Forensic Technician is not a Master at Arms. They are not primarily responsible for the pursuit and apprehension of criminals. Nor do they pass sentences on prisoners. Their primary job is to find out who committed a crime and compile all the available evidence for easy access by the rest of the department.

When a crime is committed on board the SEV Torch, it is often very obvious who the culprit is. Many murderers lack subtlety. Many saboteurs like to cackle madly about their evil plans over 145.9. And so on. Unfortunately, there are other times where more subtle crimes are carried out – a lone, desiccated corpse is found in maintenance, or a bomb is found attached to a fuel line, or the AI was subverted, or the Commanding Officer simply vanishes and leaves behind only ominous bloodstains.

This is where the Forensics Technician comes in.

The Forensics Technician has access to a wide variety of equipment, ranging from UV lighting to cameras to fingerprint dusters to electron microscopes to handheld mass spectrometers. Each of these devices has a unique function in helping to track down and identify the perpetrators of any crime committed on the station. It is the Forensic Technician's job to secure any crime scenes, interview any witnesses, and examine the resulting evidence thoroughly. Through careful analysis, they will turn this evidence into a clear description of what happened, who did it, and how. For more details on how to do forensics check out the Guide to Forensics

Once the perpetrator is identified (and, ideally, all the evidence is secured in the Evidence Storage room, with copies of everything made available to the Brig Chief and Chief of Security), the Forensic Technician can simply sit back, listen to the barking of the Masters at Arms over the department radio, and bask in the glow of a job well done. Ideally with a good cigar and a glass of good booze.

Equipment
  • Cigarettes and Zippo lighter – not actually necessary.
  • Forensic gloves – specially made gloves for forensic technicians. The luminescent threads are woven into the material stand out under scrutiny.
  • A security radio headset – this gives you access to the security channel so you can tell the officers to arrest insert-criminal-name-here.
  • A tape recorder – for documenting interviews with suspects. Remember, it can record anything said around you from your hand, suit storage, or pockets, holding up to 3 hours of conversations! Pretty cool, huh? Make sure to keep extra tapes at hand.
  • A hand labeler – For labeling evidence.
  • A camera – This is supposed to be for taking pictures of evidence, but it's obsolete in the face of the forensic scanner.
  • HUDSunglasses – These sunglasses will display a crew members job over their head. Handy for quick reference and identifying intruders.
  • Folders and pens – for paperwork
  • Crime scene kit – includes everything you need for collecting evidence at a crime scene. Fingerprints and fiber collectors, DNA swabs, and evidence bags
  • Reagent Scanner – a device that will tell you the chemical makeup of an item
  • Labcoat – to nail that CSI look
  • Brown armored vest – a vintage style armored vest unique to the Forensic Tech
  • Security belt – a belt to store all your gear
  • Maglite – heavy duty flashlight
  • Pepper spray – nonlethal chemical projectile
  • Flash – short range nonlethal
