The Bridge Officer is essentially an assistant to the rest of the Command department aboard the SEV Torch, responsible for monitoring various aspects of the ship's systems and communications, piloting the Torch, and bringing any issues to the attention of the appropriate personnel. The Bridge Officer is a good introduction and starting job for these wishing to delve into Command.

Bridge Officers answer directly to the Commanding Officer and Executive Officer, but are outranked by line officers, such as the Chief Engineer, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Science Officer and the Chief of Security.

The Role

As the name implies, most of the Bridge Officer's work takes place on the Bridge itself, where a variety of consoles are set up for easy access to the ship's cameras, suit sensors, power monitors, and so on. The first thing that most Bridge Officers will do upon start of shift is to pick their work area and begin downloading the various monitoring programs onto the console. They will then spend most of the shift watching the sensors, and monitoring the channels they have access to for any signs of an issue, and reporting said issues to the rest of Command - usually to the relevant Head of Staff, but occasionally directly to the CO or XO, as appropriate.

Bridge Officers are also responsible for piloting the Torch, or at least setting the autopilot, if there is no one available to.

Some COs or XOs will additionally supply the Bridge Officers of the day with headsets that have access to all channels, allowing them to monitor communications directly. In these cases, Bridge Officers are generally assumed to refrain from actually speaking on these channels unless relaying orders from the rest of Command.

Aside from monitoring the various communications channels and sensor systems of the ship, Bridge Officers act as general assistants to any and all members of Command in any way that is required.
